The Joy of Google

This post is about the fun of Google. Its about something that everyone has done at one time or another... and sometimes does often. It doesn't make us vain... just curious and sometimes shocked at the info that can be found. I am talking about the fun of googling your own name.

I conducted a little experiment out of boredom the other day. What sparked it was Mike was looking for a link to one of his marathon websites he goes to... so he googled his name knowing it would pull up that link. So I decided I would google people just out of curiosity. Mike is a marathoner.... so when you google his name... you get pages upon pages of Marathon Race Results... as well as Mustang events. Mike's family are big Mustang fanatics. Oh and it also brought up a page from his High school Alumni posting a list of people they are unable to locate. It was entertaining being able to tell Mike his high school peers are searching desperately for him. He is very happy to remain lost.

I then Googled Mikes parents. His mom brings up massive amounts of Mustang sites. It also brings up a ton of Mustang Forums and articles she has written for different mustang magazines. Mikes dad's name also brings up lists of Mustangs sites.

I then googled myself. All names I have ever went by. The only thing I found was one website which lists Mike and I as being registered to participate in Mustangs Across America in April (which we probably wont be going to now). I think that link is about 5 pages in there. Pretty pathetic! I then googled my parents and found nothing. I guess that makes sense... my family tends to keep to themselves more than Mike's family does.

It was a pretty entertaining half hour googling people. Some of the things you can find in there are pretty scary. When I googled Mike, I found a page in like reunion.com that listed his name and had a friend section which listed everyone in his family. Pretty unnerving that someone could google you and find out all your relatives.

I guess when you think of the scariness factor.... It makes me thankful I am a loser and am pretty well ungoogleable. All I have to say... is good luck to any bad guys who try to find me through Google. I guess I am safe... for now.
